Halloween is fun for the whole family, but it can also be a dangerous time for your teeth. Eating more candy than usual can easily lead to cavities and other dental issues if you’re not careful. If you want to make Halloween less frightening for your smile, here are 4 tips that can go a long way toward preventing oral health issues in the days following the holiday.
1. Try to Avoid Hard and Sticky Candies
Hard and sticky candies can be particularly problematic for your teeth. Sticky sweets tend to cling to your teeth for quite a while. This gives the bacteria in your mouth more time to feed on the sugar in the candy and turn it into the acids that cause tooth decay. Meanwhile, hard candies can end up cracking your teeth if you bite down on them. In short, it’s best to avoid hard and sticky candies as much as possible if you want to keep your teeth safe.
2. Do Not Eat Candy Throughout the Day
Once trick-or-treating is over, you’ll have a sizable stash of candy. With so many sweet treats readily available, it can be tempting to snack on them throughout the day. However, doing so means constantly exposing your teeth to sugar, which can significantly increase your risk of developing a cavity.
It’s generally better to only eat candy during or shortly after a meal. This is because your mouth naturally produces more saliva during mealtime. Saliva helps protect your teeth from decay by neutralizing acids and washing away food particles.
3. Drink Plenty of Water
Whenever you eat some Halloween candy, you should follow up by taking a sip of water. This will help wash away the sugar on your teeth before harmful bacteria have a chance to feed on it. Try to stay away from flavored waters that contain added sugars, as they could potentially make the problem worse.
4. Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
Practicing good oral hygiene is always important, but it’s especially vital in the days following Halloween when you’re likely consuming more candy than normal. Don’t forget to brush at least two times a day with a fluoride-based toothpaste. You should also floss daily to clean the spaces between your teeth that can’t be easily reached with a toothbrush.
There’s no need to give up candy altogether this Halloween. By following the steps listed above, you can keep your smile safe while still enjoying everything the holiday has to offer.
