Scaling & Root Planing

Gum disease is primarily caused by a buildup of bacteria-filled tartar near and below the gum line, and scaling and root planing is designed to address this directly. Firstly, all harmful substances are removed from the roots of the teeth (scaling), and then the roots are reshaped and smoothed (root planing). This makes it more difficult for tartar to accumulate around the gums in the future, plus this helps the gums quickly reattach to the teeth to provide the support they need.

Antibiotic Therapy

Because gum disease is a type of bacterial infection, antibiotics offer another reliable way to treat it. We can give a patient a special mouthwash to use at home which will apply medicine directly to the affected areas. This will not only kill the bacteria that is beyond the reach of scaling and root planing, but it will also shrink the gum pockets, which are tiny spaces between the teeth and gums where gum disease tends to thrive most.

Laser Periodontal Therapy

While severe cases of gum disease used to require surgery to treat, now, our team can instead use the BioLase WaterLase iPlus laser. This instrument uses a combination of a steady stream of water and a highly concentrated beam of light to quickly and painlessly remove bacteria and infected tissue along the gum line. Laser treatment causes practically no sensation for the patient, making it very comfortable, and post-care bleeding and swelling are reduced to the point of practically not existing.
