If your dentures slip, click, or just don’t serve your needs anymore, you’re definitely not the only one! Traditional dentures rely on suction and sometimes a little adhesive to stay put. For many denture wearers, this can be exhausting and expensive, so for them, it’s not a great long-term solution. Implant dentures and All-on-4 are both more permanent and stable, but they’re not identical, and each comes with its own trade-offs. Here’s how they stack up.
Traditional Dentures: The Original, With Real Downsides
Traditional dentures are removable, affordable upfront, and don’t require surgery. However, they sit on top of your gums, offering little in the way of stimulation for the jawbone underneath.
They can also shift while eating or speaking, and many times need adhesive to stay secure. This is because, over time, your jawbone shrinks, causing the fit to worsen and requiring regular adjustments or replacements.
Implant Dentures: A Sturdier Middle Ground
Implant dentures are secured to your jawbone using two to six titanium implants, depending on whether you choose a fixed or removable style.
The Pros: You’ll receive significantly more stability than traditional dentures, no more adhesive, easier maintenance, and reduced bone loss over time.
The Cons: They require adequate jawbone density, which can be frustrating for long-term denture wearers who have already seen their jawbones resorb. They also require a long healing process before placement.
All-on-4: Maximum Stability, Fewer Requirements
All-on-4 (and its extension, All-on-X) takes things a step further. These implants are placed at strategic angles, often with longer implant posts, to work even in patients with less jawbone density.
The Pros: A fixed, permanent result that functions like natural teeth. Plus, your restoration is often placed on the same day as your implant surgery.
The Con: All-on-4 is a more expensive option because of the specialized training, equipment, and planning that goes into it.
Which One Is Right for You?
The best option depends on your jawbone density, budget, and lifestyle preferences. Patients with sufficient bone density and a preference for flexibility often lean toward implant dentures. Those with more significant bone loss, or who want the most natural, permanent result, often find All-on-4 to be the better fit.
If you’re not sure which option is right for you, call your dentist and schedule a consultation. They can walk you through your options and ensure that you’re happy with the results and the investment it takes to get there.
