Tips & Tricks for Talking with Your New Dentures

Man talking on the phone and smiling

Make no mistake, dentures have been used for thousands of years to replace missing teeth, and they’re still one of the most reliable options available. But, like with many things, adjusting to a brand-new set can be challenging – at least at first. You might notice yourself lisping or having difficulties enunciating clearly.

Fortunately, there are some tips and tricks you can follow to help yourself adjust. Here’s how to start talking with your new dentures like a pro!

Take it Slow

The most important thing to do when learning anything is to take it slow and be patient with yourself. Getting frustrated won’t do you any good (and could actually make it harder to adjust to your new smile). This isn’t a homework assignment with a due date, so no matter how long you take to pronounce those pesky “s,” “sh,” and “th” sounds, you can be proud of your efforts!

Practice, Practice, Practice!

It’s true what they say – “practice makes perfect.” You’ll never get used to how your dentures feel and move when you talk if you don’t speak! If you don’t feel comfortable trying to work around a lisp in front of other people, don’t sweat it. You can read out loud to yourself or record yourself talking in a private setting. However you choose to do it, make sure you carve out some time in your schedule to practice using your new dentures.

Denture Adhesive

Now, there is a product you can use to help keep your dentures in place, which is particularly useful for those who have never had to wear dentures before. But it should be used sparingly. This product is called denture adhesive, and there are three main types to choose from: creams, strips, and gels.

Rest assured, the problem doesn’t have to do with quality or effectiveness. It’s that most denture adhesives contain zinc, one of the vitamins it is possible to have too much of in your system. Zinc overdose can cause long-term nerve damage, among other things, so if you’re going to use denture adhesive, read the product instructions carefully!

Keep Your Dentist in The Loop

Remember, your dentist is there to provide professional advice and assistance when you need it. If you’re having a hard time speaking clearly with your new dentures or start to get frustrated, don’t hesitate to give them a call! With the right support, wearing your dentures will feel perfectly natural in no time.
